A twist of fate…

We are often asked how we discovered Saba in the first place. Visiting there initially, it was like we had known it forever and it would always remain in our hearts, but getting there to begin with was purely accidental. While vacationing in Sint Maarten in April of 2014, we had initially scheduled a day excursion to St. Bart’s. The plan was to fly there, have a $20 glass of water and turn around again before anyone noticed us. The day of our flight, bad weather at the destination prevented our departure. The tour sales agent was reluctant to give up so easy and she tried to persuade us to visit other islands instead, while the less adventurous of us tried to secure a refund - having no interest in baking in the sun or a booze tour on a catamaran.

Almost as an afterthought she asked:

“What about Saba?”

Of course it had always been there, a tiny pale outline visible on the horizon, rising up to meet the clouds. An inactive volcano comprising five square miles of tropical paradise, home to two thousand people with cliff faces rising nearly vertical out of the Caribbean Sea. This was a hidden gem that was perfect for hiking, diving, sight-seeing and eco-tourism. A ninety-minute ferry ride was all that stood between us and this secluded dream. Soon after we arrived, we knew we would be back and the return visits got closer together and longer in duration.

One road leads you there.

We found an impossible road running between seaport and airport, connecting four communities and the friendliest people on the planet. White houses with red roofs and green shutters - simple, peaceful and genuine. Every turn brought a picture postcard view as pretty as the one before it. In short order, we knew that we wanted to make Saba a lasting part of our lives and a gift we could share with others. So began our quest to find land and build a vacation home…

Hideout Logo Medium.png

Our Logo

The Hideout logo features the same gold from the Saban flag, representing the warmth of the Caribbean sunshine. The letters “H” and “O” are hidden symbolically in the logo much the same way our home will escape notice, unless you go looking for it. And lastly, the logo’s lines are arranged in the usual path between two points on the island: up, down, up some more, down again, and around!
